This Act establishes the Personal Injury Commission of New South Wales (PIC), replacing the Workers Compensation Commission and various motor accident dispute resolution services provided by the State Insurance Regulatory Authority.

The Act implements a common registry for workers compensation and motor accident disputes, and aligns practice and procedure for these disputes where appropriate. It also contains extensive amendments to other NSW legislation to achieve this result.

The Act was drafted largely while the State was in lockdown because of COVID-19. As a result, most of the staff of the PCO and the instructors were meeting and working remotely. This presented significant logistical challenges given the complexity of the Act.

Despite these challenges, the Bill for the Act was introduced into Parliament in early June 2020. The Act became law in August 2020 and the PIC commenced its operations on 1 March 2021.

The Act passed Parliament on 5 August 2020.
